Body cam video released after Sugarcreek officer attacked with a screwdriver

Sugarcreek Police Officer Captain Brian Dalton continues to recover at Akron General Hospital where he was life-flighted after an attack on Wednesday morning during a routine traffic stop. Dalton was allegedly stabbed by a male who was operating a commercial truck. Body cam video was released tonight that has been edited that shows most of the incident. “We expect a full recovery at this point, stated Police Chief Kevin Kaser. Dalton, 37, a veteran of the Sugarcreek Police Department, shot and killed the suspect after being stabbed with a screwdriver when he presented paperwork to the male subject and explained he would need to make an appearance in New Philadelphia Municipal Court. The summons was based on the male driver operating the truck in a no-truck zone on Fairview at Yoder Avenue and damaging a lawn in the process. The call came in at approximately 10 a.m. and both Dalton and Kaser responded to the call and located the commercial truck in a Second Street business parking lot. However, about 10 minutes later, another call came in from a Third Street business and Kaser left the scene to respond. The investigation is being conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. It will take at least five months. The Summit County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy of the deceased. Kaser noted that these situations are something they train for and hope never happen. “You may go through your whole career and never deal with it,” he said. Dalton has been an officer since 2011. He was promoted to Captain in 2018.
